Situated on the banks of the river Glazne and at the base of the Pirin mountains is the quaint little mountain town of Bansko. Made up majorly of traditional Bulgarian homes with winding streets and cobbled roads this Europe’s major winter holiday destination is going through a major transformation to fit into the modern sphere.

This resort town is a testimony of the historic Balkan character which it still chooses to carry on with proudly.

Reaching there:

Located at a distance of about 170 km is the airport at Sofia which is the nearest approach point to Bansko.

Skiing Locations:

The best time to hit the slopes in Bansko to experience the thrill is between mid December and mid April. The skiing runs on the slopes are divided into various levels to suit all grades of skiers- beginners, intermediates and professionals.

To ensure a regular skiing opportunity the slopes have access to about 40 snow cannons which provide the slopes with artificial snow thereby adding to the number of skiing slopes already present naturally there in Bansko. The equipments needing for skiing are available for hiring at the equipment shed near the gondola and can be accessed by anyone keen on hiring them.

Also present here is the largest school which take classes in skiing and snowboarding. This school namely, Ulen skiing and Snowboard school is equipped to train and teach skiing enthusiasts of all age groups.

Activities beyond the slopes:

With the town of Bansko still clinging to its historical richness there are plenty of options available in the town which allows one to turn back time momentarily. The Sveta Troitsa Church, the icon museum and the Rila monastery are places worth a visit. The children can be kept occupied at the various skiing schools opened here and also at the Babini which is a craft centre and a café for small children.

The local flavor of this part of the world can best be experiences at its local Sunday markets which become host to cheap local goods including clothes, shoes and authentic local souvenirs.

Apart from this Sunday market there are many other souvenir shops all around the town which can be explored in search for the perfect gift or reminder to tack back home in fond rememberance of Bansko. The crafts and textile exhibition as well as the Ploshtad Nikola Vapstarov are home to some of the most exquisite and authentic handlooms and crafts.

Nightlife and Food:

This resort town of Bansko instead of the chic and upmarket night culture provides one with the traditional, earthly and homely Bulgarian night out option. the town provides abundant wining and dining options to travelers in the form of mehanas which are dining out options and also in the form of ploshtad Vazrazhdane which houses bars and pubs equipped with the down to earth basic facilities.

The Mehanas provide travelers the authentic taste of Bulgaria through its traditional food, wine, drinks and lice country music. The street lining snack stalls come handy when one is looking for that mid day snack to quench the sudden hunger pangs.

A mix of tradition and modernization is what Bansko is all about. Feel it while you cruise down the gentle snow slopes here..
